Geographical games

I remember when Tetris was the best thing since sliced bread.  When we were waiting for our swimming race at galas, we would share a Nintendo, taking it in turns to slot the coloured squares/rectangles into the right places.  Now though, we have all sorts of incredible graphics for games like Fortnite and Call of Duty.  More recently, I was surprised to see how much games like Wordle have taken hold of many of our students and teacher community.   So I thought I’d use this blog to round up some of the different games out there - some with a geography quiz, others perhaps more suited to the staffroom or tutor time, you decide!!!

Globle

I have to start with this one!  In this game, each day you simply name a country to start and then it is coloured on a spectrum between yellow to red depending on how close your guess is to the location.  There are various theories on where to start in the world but it’s a great way to improve location knowledge and also to help prove that Africa is not a country!!! Worldle

Another one with a similar principle of a guess per day.  This time, you have to guess the country based on its outline.  It’s a toughy but still good fun.  Here’s the link: WORLDLE

Stop disasters!

This game has been around for a while and is provided by the UN office for disaster reduction.  It gets you to consider a variety of management strategies for tsunamis, earthquakes, wildfires and others, to protect a given community.  You also have various things to do as part of the mission.  You can vary the difficulty, which generally means you have a larger area to protect.  When you have done what you can in the time allowed, the hazard event occurs and you can see how effective your measures were through newspaper style report.  Students have often found this incredibly addictive!  Here’s the link: STOP DISASTERS!

Heardle

This is a favourite in our Geography office at lunchtime.  This time you listen to the opening notes of a song and have to guess it.  You can keep extending the amount you listen to until you can get it.  We’ve found it is very good at showing your age!!! Here’s the link: Heardle

Framed!

This one is for film lovers out there - I’m pretty rubbish at this one but my husband is a master!  In this game, you are shown a still image from a film and need to guess it based on that one.  More photos follow if you guess incorrectly.  Here’s the link: FRAMED! 

A similar one is called MOVIEDLE where you get a 1 second version of the entire movie - if you guess wrong it slows it down ever so slightly.
