Geogra3: Three videos to teach about climate change

14/07/2023

For this week’s Geogra3 I thought I would share (at least) three videos on climate change that can be used in your geography lessons or as a basis for revision.

So let’s crack on…..

1. Natural causes of climate change (link to video)

This is the first of two videos from the team at Time for Geography.  The Earth's climate has changed naturally throughout the Quaternary, varying between cold glacial periods when much of the UK was buried beneath thick ice sheets, to warm interglacial periods like today. But what caused this natural climate variability over the last 2.6 million years?  This video considers:

  • The Earth's climate system and the natural greenhouse effect
  • The global energy budget
  • Orbital forcing
  • Solar activity
  • The effect of volcanoes and asteroid impacts

2. Human causes of climate change (link to video)

In this second video, Time for Geography considers the following human activities and how they have caused the global climate to change:

  • Burning of fossils fuels
  • Industry
  • Agriculture
  • Deforestation
  • The cooling effect of aerosols

3. Climate change: the facts

This BBC documentary is available on BBCiPlayer, Clickview and also Youtube and provides an excellent account of the science of climate change and potential solutions to this global threat. Interviews with some of the world’s leading climate scientists explore recent extreme weather conditions such as unprecedented storms and catastrophic wildfires. They also reveal what dangerous levels of climate change could mean for both human populations and the natural world in the future.  Of course, it has the added bonus of being presented by the legend, David Attenborough!

4. Youth Unstoppable (link to video - make sure you create a free account with Waterbear first)

This is probably my favourite video this month and it comes from the free video streaming site, Waterbear.  Youth Unstoppable is the only feature documentary to cover the rise of the Youth Climate Movement from the youth perspective, which has now become the most important voice in the climate debate. Over the course of 12 years filming in 9 countries, Youth Unstoppable follows Slater’s intimate journey from the age of 13 to adulthood as she grows alongside this diverse and ever evolving movement of youth fighting for the world they want to live in.

If you would like to utilise these video clips in your lessons but are limited on the time needed to prepare resources around them, you might want to have a look at the Geography Teacher Box vault.

Lesson presentations and worksheets with answers have just been added for each of these videos, so have a quick watch of the preview below to get an idea of what there is:
