Geogra3: Three videos to help teach about volcanoes

10/02/2023

In this week's Geogra3, I thought I would share three useful video clips that can be used in lessons, based on natural hazards, and specifically volcanoes.  I hope it saves you some time planning for this week’s lessons!

1. Eyjafjallajökull Icelandic Eruption 2010

This programme is useful as an introduction or perhaps a recap of the Eyjafjallajökull Icelandic Eruption 2010.  It covers the specific impacts in Iceland itself in both the short and long term, while also looking at the different methods of monitoring.  It's only about 15 minutes long so there is plenty of time to include a variety of activities surrounding the causes, impacts and responses.

2. In the shadow of Italy’s volcanoes

Another programme made by Discover Education, this time a bit longer at 36 minutes.  It focuses on the Gulf of Naples and the potential threat of major volcanic activity.  It briefly explores the different methods used to monitor Vesuvius as well as considering the variety of tectonic activity that occurs here.  It also touches on the reasons why people continue to live in such an active area and the attractions for tourists.

3. White Island volcano 2019

In this extended news programme, reporters investigate what tourists knew about the dangers of visiting an active volcano and whether more could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

BONUS - Perfect Planet - ep1 Volcano

In this programme from the BBC (iPlayer needed) David Attenborough explores the life-giving nature of volcanoes and talks about their importance in shaping planet Earth.  There is a strong focus on the animals that live around and depend upon volcanoes, but it also considers different types of volcanic features like atolls and geysers.  Great as an intro to the topic or to use at the end.

If you would like to utilise these video clips in your lessons but are limited on the time needed to prepare resources around them, you might want to have a look at the Geography Teacher Box vault.  Lesson presentations and worksheets have just been added, so have a quick watch of the preview below to get an idea of what there is:

And that's it for this week's Geogra3; remember teaching is a job, it doesn't have to take over your life.
