Geogra3: Three geography lessons on resource management and food

12/01/2023

In this Geogra3, I will be sharing three video clips that are useful for teaching about resource management and specifically about food.

1. Why is Madagascar going hungry?

In this 12 minute video clip from DW, it considers whether the current food scarcity crisis in Madagascar is due to climate change, as there has been no significant rainfall for 7 years.  However, it also voices opinions that it is more to do with government instability and corruption as well as continued high birth rates with polygamy an accepted part of society.

2. The journey of food waste

“Just eat it” (1 hour 13mins) is a programme streamed on Waterbear.  It follows a couple who set themselves the challenge of only eating discarded food waste for 6 months.  They begin with a fair amount of optimism but complications emerge along the way that they hadn’t first considered, including actually putting on weight!  It’s a fascinating watch as they explore the historical causes of food surplus as well as some of the ways food waste is being utilised in other areas of the supply chain.

3. Food for everyone?

This video clip (28mins) again from DW, looks at the various farming methods that are seeking to ensure that we can continue to provide food for growing populations.  It looks at crop diversification in Germany, seaweed farms in the Netherlands, and vertical city farms in Denmark helping to ensure food security.

If you would like to utilise these video clips in your lessons but are limited on the time needed to prepare resources around them, you might want to have a look at the Geography Teacher Box vault.  Classroom-ready lesson presentations and worksheets have just been added, so have a quick watch of the preview below to get an idea of what there is:

I love nothing more than supporting Geography teachers as we are a pretty awesome bunch.
