Geogra3: London, Antarctic Flags, Geography Quiz

15/10/2022

In this week’s Geogra3 blog I’m sharing the content of my weekly email to Geography teachers - three Geography related things on London, Antarctica and a news quiz.

1. Send a flag to Antarctica

Each year, the UK Polar Network run an outreach project for schools, linked to Antarctica Day (1st December).  Schools are encouraged to teach students about the continent and then design a flag for Antarctica (as it doesn’t have one of it’s own).  Three flags can then be entered from the school to be taken by one of researchers or engineers to Antarctica.  A photo will then be taken of the flag “on location.”  It all sounds very exciting to me! If you’d like to register your interest you’ll need to fill in this google form by 24th October, and then flag entries will need to be in by 22nd November.

2. London’s environmental problems

If you’re using London as a case study, this article could be useful to help develop academic reading with your students.  It outlines the 5 biggest environmental problems London is currently facing as well as a brief overview of some of the methods aimed at solving the issues.  You can find the article here.

Also, the lesson resources added to the Geography Teacher Box vault in October included one linked to a video on multiculturalism in London.  For further information, watch this video:

3. Geography in the news

Each week on the Tutor2U blog, a short multiple choice Geography in the News quiz is published.  Here is the one from the week beginning 7th October.  You can run it in classroom mode straight from the site or you can download it as a powerpoint.  I always think it’s useful to have something like this up your sleeve for those random couple of minutes when you might need a filler or if your weekly assembly is cancelled and you’re left with nothing to do with your tutor group (we’ve all been there!).

That’s it for this week.  If you’ve enjoyed reading you might like to sign up to my Geogra3 newsletter to get 3 useful Geography things landing in your inbox every week.  Just click this link to subscribe today.

And remember, keep being curious - there’s a whole world out there!

I love nothing more than supporting Geography teachers as we are a pretty awesome bunch.

So here are five ways that I might be able to help you….
