Geogra3: How to love teaching again

24/02/2023

Welcome to this week’s newsletter where I normally share 3 Geography things with you.  But I’ve gone a bit rogue!  I was lucky enough to be offered an advance copy of a book written by a former teacher and I thought I would share it with you today in the hope that it might help some of you out.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed, overworked, or under appreciated?

Is teaching leaving you burned out and exhausted?

Does teaching not always feel like how you dreamed it would be?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, first know you are not alone. In recent years the demands on teachers have grown exponentially. But before you submit your notice, you should definitely have a read of this book: How to Love Teaching Again.

It’s written by Jamie Sears, of the Not So Wimpy Teacher. She is a former teacher who now creates resources to help teachers deliver effective and engaging lessons in the classroom.  Jamie has pulled together her favourite timesaving tips and strategies for setting boundaries so that you can be a great teacher and also have a life outside of school and she shares them all in her new book, How to Love Teaching Again.

Here’s a sneak peek of the Table of Contents:

Chapter 1 - The Standards for Being a Great Teacher

Chapter 2 - Ditch Your To-Do List

Chapter 3 - Batch Your Lesson Plans

Chapter 4 - Simplify How You Teach

Chapter 5 - Grading

Chapter 6 - Keep Your Eyes on Your Own Paper

Chapter 7 - Boundaries

Chapter 8 - Not So Wimpy Wins

Chapter 9 - Your End-of-Unit Assignment

From my perspective, I found it a really easy read as she includes some funny stories as well as some really practical tips.  Before you dive in though, it’s worth remembering that Jamie is first and foremost writing from a primary school teacher perspective so some parts may feel irrelevant to secondary Geography teachers.  However, on the whole, there are some really simple strategies to save time and establish boundaries, showing you how to be a great teacher without sacrificing yourself.  I definitely wish I had read something like this when I was starting out!

Whether you have lost your love for teaching, you’re feeling overworked and overwhelmed, or you could just use a few simple tips to make teaching easier (I mean who doesn’t need that), this book is for you.

How to Love Teaching Again hits shelves (and mailboxes) on April 4, 2023. But you don’t have to wait until spring. You can pre-order a copy now and be among the first to get your hands on Jamie’s book.
