Geogra3: Free lesson resources on Mumbai case study

26/05/2023

I’ve seen that many of you are starting to think about updating your schemes of work so I thought I would share a popular lesson from the GTB vault as a thank you for being in my world.  I’ve also got something coming soon that I hope you will find super helpful…..

Below you will find links to all the resources needed to teach:

Can we assess the quality of life in Mumbai?

This lesson considers both the challenges and opportunities for residents living in Mumbai. It begins by asking students to complete a photo analysis of the Dharavi slums.

The independent task links to a video clip on Youtube from DW called Megacity Mumbai: forms slums to skyscrapers which is about 40 minutes long.  It compares the life of the super rich and how continued urban sprawl is impacting the surrounding wildlife.  It also shows the huge contrast with those living in Dharavi and the potential issues posed by the redevelopment projects.

To help foster engagement with the video, there is a student worksheet with a series of questions that can be found here.  Alongside this worksheet, is a detailed answer sheet to ensure you have the specific information needed to encourage further discussion and understanding.  This can be found here.

(Moscow and Mexico City resources are available in the GTB vault too!)

The follow-up activities ask students to consider the pros and cons of the redevelopment projects using both their own notes and ideas, as well as a link to a website to check that they’ve covered a comprehensive range of points.  They are then asked to think creatively and consider whether there is a better alternative to the redevelopment projects.

A longer task is also provided perhaps for those students working at a higher level which encourages them to write a longer response to the question of whether the challenges of living in a megacity outweighs the opportunities.

Finally, there is a homework task, asking students to research the work carried out by NGOs to improve the life of urban residents across India.

This is one of many lessons available in the GTB vault. This screenshot shows a list of what is currently there, with three more being added next month on Iran, Russia and Vietnam.

Lastly, I am envisaging adding full units of work (suitable for ages 11-14) to the GTB vault over the coming months with a full relaunch of the membership in the Autumn term.  This will mean a closure  over the summer so I can work on this.  If you’d like to take advantage of the current low price and lock it in for as long as you are a continuous member you’ll need to join before July.

Here’s the link if you’d like to have a 1 week free trial of the GTB vault today.

That's it for this week!
