AQA Geography Pre-release 2024 - resource roundup

29/03/2024

It’s that time of year again when geographers around the country are figuring out how they are going to squeeze in enough time to teach and prepare students for the pre-release section of AQA Geogaphy’s paper 3.  Fortunately for my department this is the last year that we will be burdened with it as we are switching to OCR B (hooray!).  However, as there seems to be so many people providing lots of ready-made resources for us to utilise, I thought I would do a quick round up of what I’ve found so far and add links all in one place.  I hope you find it useful and if you spot any others to add, please drop me an email (nicola@thegeographyteacherbox.com) and I’ll update it.

So let’s get started with the less obvious ones:

Over on YouTube there are two channels that are worthy of mention.  Firstly, there is Mr B who has put together two videos.  The first is about 11 mins and goes through each of the figures in the pre-release booklet, while being “on-location” in Tudeley.  He also includes a list of possible questions throughout the video.  The second video shows drone footage of the area set to music to give students a feel of the location.  Mr B has also got a website where he is offering a powerpoint presentation along with a mock paper and answers to complement the videos.

A second resource on Youtube comes from Geography revision videos and includes an 18 minute summary of the key issues in the pre-release, along with some possible question ideas.  It has been put together by James Simmonds and it is partly utilised to help grow his own tuition company so there is a little promotion about half way through the video.

Becki Quigley over on X (Twitter) has produced another wonderful booklet which she is sharing to followers on her page if you send a direct message.  Last year’s booklet was fantastic so I assume this one will be too!

I’ve found a couple of resources up on TES already.  I’ve no idea about the quality of these as I haven’t purchased from the authors before, but thought I would share anyway:

And now onto the more obvious ones:

Internet Geography has some great free resources to help students prepare for the pre-release and understand what it is.  There are also a host of self-marking quizzes and flashcards for vocab that can be found here. If you’re a subscriber to the (very useful) Plus membership, there are a whole host of resources in there including:

  • Figure 1 work booklet
  • Figure 1 knowledge organiser template / guided revision sheets
  • Figure 1 key terms and definitions sheets
  • Figure 2 work booklet
  • Figure 2 knowledge organiser template / guided revision sheets
  • Figure 2 key terms and definitions sheets
  • Figure 3 work booklet
  • Figure 3 knowledge organiser template / guided revision sheets
  • Figure 3 key terms and definitions sheets

Anthony is working hard to add even more stuff over the coming days!

Tutor2U have also added a bumper free pack including activities and exam practice which can be downloaded here.  This is complemented by the comprehensive worked answer pack that can be purchased here.

Rob Gamesby has also been adding resources to the Cool Geography members area.  I’m afraid I’m not a subscriber so can’t comment on these, except to say if the free A-level resources he has provided on Changing Places is an indication of quality, then I would imagine the pre-release stuff will be good too!  However, he has added a free vocab quizlet that can be accessed here

And I think that’s it.  I hope this saves you a bit of time with the inevitable planning that this pre-release entails.  Best of luck!
